Washington, NH<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t surprised to find that most hotels in Salem were already sold out next year.  Columbus Day weekend is a \u201clast hurrah\u201d for many of tourist locations in the Northeast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilton.com\/en\/hotels\/bossahx-hampton-inn-salem-boston\/?SEO_id=GMB-HX-BOSSAHX&amp;y_source=1_MTc0NzQ2MjgtNzE1LWxvY2F0aW9uLmdvb2dsZV93ZWJzaXRlX292ZXJyaWRl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hampton Inn Salem Boston,<\/a> part of the Hilton brand, is one hotel that was still available and caught my eye.&nbsp; This new, modern looking hotel is right in the heart of downtown Salem and walkable to shops, attractions, and restaurants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For someone who will be traveling with small children the hotel is also equipped with a pool and comes with the most valuable perk of all &#8230; free breakfast.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Salem-Hotel.jpg\" alt=\"Hampton Inn Salem Hotel\" class=\"wp-image-4135\" width=\"1015\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Salem-Hotel.jpg 416w, https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Salem-Hotel-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1015px) 100vw, 1015px\" \/><figcaption>Hampton Inn Salem Hotel<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With the price still hovering around $500 per night, I set to work figuring out how I can use the Hilton Honors program and stay three nights for free.&nbsp; There was just one problem:&nbsp; I am normally a Marriott or IHG guy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are Hotel Credit Cards Worth It?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have accumulated a nice cache of points for both the Marriott Bonvoy and IHG Rewards Club loyalty programs.&nbsp; This is mostly by having their co-branded credit cards in my wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/recommends\/dl-chase-marriott-bonvoy-boundless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marriott Bonvoy, I hold the Chase<\/a> and American Express co-branded cards.&nbsp; Each with an annual free night certificate and a healthy sign-up bonus.&nbsp; The <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/recommends\/dl-amex-marriott-bonvoy-brilliant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant\u2122 American Express\u00ae Card<\/a> is a premium card, but don\u2019t let the high annual fee scare you, I have had no problem getting extra value from it each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/AMEX-Marriott-Bonvoy.png\" alt=\"AMEX Marriott Bonvoy\" class=\"wp-image-4136\" width=\"564\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/AMEX-Marriott-Bonvoy.png 340w, https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/AMEX-Marriott-Bonvoy-300x189.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/><figcaption>AMEX Marriott Bonvoy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For IHG, I hold two Chase co-branded cards.&nbsp; One of them is closed to new applicants, but the newly revamped <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/recommends\/dl-ihg-club-premier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IHG\u00ae Rewards Club Premier Credit Card<\/a> offers a free night certificate for an $89 annual fee.&nbsp; There is also the no annual fee IHG\u00ae Rewards Club Travel Credit Card.&nbsp; Both cards are offering large sign up bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To book the Hampton Inn Salem Boston for three nights, I needed a total of 150,000 Hilton points.&nbsp; So how do I go about booking a Hilton property with having a total of zero points in my Hilton Honors account?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I immediately thought of credit card welcome offers also sometimes called sign-up bonuses.&nbsp; Realizing that this is a popular weekend, I did not want to be stuck waiting for the card to arrive in the mail, achieving the minimum spend for the welcome offer, and waiting for the points to post to my account.&nbsp; I wanted to book the room right away!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the value of transferable points truly shines.&nbsp; The hero of this story is <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/recommends\/dl-blue-business-plus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Express Membership Rewards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Membership Rewards can be redeemed for cash, but they can be more valuable when transferred to any of the 19 airlines partners and three hotel partners currently in the AMEX travel program.&nbsp; It earns 2x on all purchases up to $50,000 a year and has no annual fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/AMEX-Blue-Business-Plus.jpg\" alt=\"AMEX Blue Business Plus\" class=\"wp-image-4058\" width=\"612\" height=\"388\"\/><figcaption>AMEX Blue Business Plus<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is It Worth Transferring AMEX Points to Hilton?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty of the program is that American Express sometimes offers transfer bonuses.&nbsp; There just so happened to be a 40% transfer bonus to Hilton Honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"348\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hilton-Success-2.jpg\" alt=\"Hilton Honors\" class=\"wp-image-4141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hilton-Success-2.jpg 348w, https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hilton-Success-2-300x229.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px\" \/><figcaption>Hilton Honors<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Transferring 54,000 Membership Rewards points got me more than the 150,000 Hilton points I needed for our trip to Salem. &nbsp; I did the math and for me that transfer had a value of 2.74 cents per Membership Rewards point versus the cash value of the stay.&nbsp; The general internet consensus is that Membership Reward points are worth at least 2 cents per point, so this was a clear win for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transfers from AMEX to Hilton are instant, and now we\u2019re booked for a long autumn weekend in Salem!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/October-Confirmation.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4142\" width=\"632\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/October-Confirmation.jpg 576w, https:\/\/teachingmillionaires.com\/newstag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/October-Confirmation-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are stories about getting ridiculous points value, much greater than 2 cents per point, especially with transfers to airlines for first class seats going to far off countries.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t try to live up to other people\u2019s standards, so I am thrilled with our plans for a family weekend next fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My suggestion is to think about what you value most and don\u2019t be obsessed with getting the best deal ever, just get YOUR deal.&nbsp; Save up for what you want and make it happen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, I am looking forward to a little \u201cdouble, double, toil and trouble\u201d with my family for a spooky, fun-filled weekend in Salem.&nbsp;
